Course Description
Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in the United States. This course provides a comprehensive overview of the colorectal cancer continuum including risk factors and polyp development, diagnostic imaging, pathology, and treatment modalities. Emphasis is placed on the role of medical imaging and biopsy in early detection and diagnosis, staging using the TNM system, and treatment planning. Attention is given to the growing concern of young-onset colorectal cancer and the evolving role of multidisciplinary care in improving survival rates. Radiographers will gain the foundational insight needed to actively contribute to improved patient outcomes through their role in the diagnostic process.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the audience will be able to:
- Describe the anatomical structure and function of the colon and rectum as it relates to cancer development.
- Identify different types of colorectal polyps and their malignant potential.
- Recognize risk factors and hereditary syndromes associated with colorectal cancer.
- List and explain key screening methods, including traditional and emerging technologies.
- Interpret the TNM staging system for colorectal cancer and differentiate between cancer stages.
- Outline treatment options including surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and targeted therapies.
- Understand the rising trend of young-onset CRC and the importance of early detection.

Kristin Duncan, M.P.A., B.S., R.T.(R)(T)(ARRT)
Kristin Duncan is an ARRT-certified Radiation Therapist with over 16 years of experience in cancer care. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Sciences from the University of South Alabama and a Master of Public Administration with a Certificate in Public Health Administration from Troy University. Kristin has served at both Providence Hospital and Infirmary Cancer Care, where she contributes to research, community outreach, and student instruction. Recognized as an Outstanding Clinical Instructor, she is dedicated to advancing patient-centered care and supporting the next generation of radiation therapy professionals. Kristin is an active member of the American Society of Radiologic Technologists and the American Society for Public Administration.
