Course Description
This presentation will engage students, technologists and educators in an interactive discussion about the “little things” that lead to high-quality radiographic imaging. Several important components of radiographic image quality and radiation safety will be discussed, including manual techniques, Exposure Index/Deviation Index and collimation. The latest guidance on shielding will be presented and framed within our commitment to radiation protection, both for our patients and ourselves. The Japanese concept of Shokunin Kishitsu, or the “craftsman spirit” will be explored as it relates to a pursuit of excellence in radiographic imaging. Commitment to clinical excellence is vital towards our ongoing efforts to elevate the profession of medical imaging and radiation therapy.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the audience will be able to:
- Outline the advantages & disadvantages of the continued automation of radiographic imaging technology during image formation
- List and describe technical factors related to radiographic image quality and optimized patient exposure/dose
- Discuss the recent changes to the practice of patient shielding
- Reinforce best practices in occupational radiation protection
- Apply empirically supported best practices for radiographic image quality and radiation protection in their workplace
- Describe the dynamic role of the radiologic technologist in consideration of ongoing changes to the science of radiation protection and imaging procedures
