Course Description

Fully competent heart valves are of the utmost importance when it comes to maintaining cardiac health. Sometimes, these hardworking valves malfunction and can cause issues which threaten a patient’s overall health. Although pharmacological agents are available for some cardiac conditions, there are not medications to treat aortic valve stenosis or regurgitation. The gold standard for valve replacement is to have it replaced in the operating room. Many patients are not candidates for surgery though, and fortunately there is another less invasive option. This lecture will explain how the aortic valve works and the TAVR procedure to replace it.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the audience will be able to:

  • Describe blood flow through the heart
  • Recognize the importance of functioning cardiac valves
  • Identify causes and symptoms of valve insufficiency
  • Explain the TAVR procedure as it relates to the cardiac cath lab
